This rural home at Meroo Meadow is built in warm earth tones and organised around a sheltered courtyard, with the living rooms opening onto it and the hillside rising behind.

The form is low and flat-roofed, with rendered walls in a soft clay colour and a parapet that squares the building off against the sky. Large sliding glass doors sit deep in a reveal beneath a rough-sawn timber lintel, and the paving steps out into gravel, olive trees and native grasses.

The courtyard is the heart of it. A rendered outdoor fireplace with a brick-lined firebox and a heavy timber mantel beam anchors one wall, flanked by built-in bench seating with tiled tops and open niches stacked with firewood.

Inside, the walls are finished in a textured render in a pale sand tone and the floors are burnished concrete. A long hallway is lit by three square skylights set into the ceiling, with curved wall lights and solid timber doors down one side.

The joinery is the standout. Richly figured timber cabinetry runs the length of the wall with routed finger pulls in place of handles and floating timber shelves above, and small square natural stone tiles cover both the benchtop and the splashback. Brass tapware picks up the same warmth.

The bathroom carries the palette through, with terracotta tiles laid in a herringbone pattern underfoot, a freestanding oval bath set under the window, and a round basin with a coarse aggregate finish on a rendered ledge.
